Standards Committee Work

Draft ISA112 SCADA Systems Lifecycle Diagram

I enjoy working with experts to develop, update and maintain published consensus-based standards. I find consensus-based standards work is very rewarding as you get the opportunity to share ideas and best practices with the top experts in their area of expertise.

Standards committee work is a long-term endeavour, with it often taking 3-5 years to develop a good high-quality consensus-based technical standard or technical report. There are many benefits of using published standards, the chief being that you can avoid having to do custom-work by using best practices that have been developed by strong committees of experts that has been subjected to a rigourous peer-review process.

Here is a list of the committees I am currently actively involved with:

  • ISA112 SCADA Systems, Co-chair - International Society of Automation
  • ISA18 Alarm Management, Voting Member
  • ISA101 HMI Design - Human Machine Interfaces, Voting Member
  • ISA105 Commissioning
  • Standards and Practices Board, International Society of Automation
  • ISA99 Cybersecurity for Industrial Control Systems
  • CSA P125: Operational Functional Safety and Security - Canadian Standards Association
  • IEC TC65/65A/WG15: Industrial Process Measurement, Control and Automation - System Aspects - Management of Alarm Systems for the Process Industries - info - International Electrotechnical Commission
  • IEC TC65/65A/WG19: Industrial Process Measurement, Control and Automation - System Aspects - Human-Machine Interfaces for Process Automation Systems - info
  • SCC/IEC TC65/65A: Canadian Mirror Committee for IEC-TC65/65A: Industrial Process Measurement, Control and Automation - Standards Council of Canada
  • AWWA Cybersecurity Sub-Committee - Amercian Water Works Association
  • WEF Automation and Information Technology Committee - Water Environment Federation
  • OWWA Automation Committee - Ontario Waterworks Association (Ontario, Canada)
